Harvest Fair 2022
The past two plus years have been difficult for us all, but also have been a time for reflection for Friends of the Farms on what is at the core of our mission, the challenges our farmers face, and as a small nonprofit, how we can use our limited resources to ensure there is a thriving future for local food and farms.
While we were sad not to be able to hold Harvest Fair the past two years due to COVID, it allowed us to undertake some significant and impactful projects.
We are building three tiny houses from repurposed and recycled materials for the next generation of farmers. We are creating a Native Food Forest, an ecosystem restoration project on a 13-acre parcel of land, clearing invasive species and planting over 600 native edible plants so far. We’ve partnered with Island School on curriculum that gets students out on farms throughout the school year to learn about where food comes from, the history of our farmland, and heathy ecosystems. We've been gifted the pro bono services of Miller Hull Architects to create a Master Plan for a Farm Village at the Suyematsu Farmstead. And we completed significant repairs and maintenance to the Morales Farmhouse and are once again providing affordable housing to interns coming to work from around the country with local farmers.
And so, after much consideration, it was decided that Harvest Fair as it has been in the past will not return. We will miss the celebration and we know you will too.
We are hopeful that the worst of COVID is behind us and we can begin planning smaller events for later this year to bring the community together to engage with and celebrate our local farms and food.
