We’re Looking for our next Treasurer!

Overview:

Friends of the Farms is a 501c.3 non-profit Bainbridge Island-based organization that works to build a dynamic, resilient and equitable food system that supports working farmers, local agriculture and a healthy community. Since 2001, we have worked to preserve and protect access to agricultural land on the Island.

Over the years, we have managed the City’s publicly-owned farmlands and farm leases, and provided critical support to the Island’s commercial farmers and farm interns in the form of housing. In 2022, with considerable public support, we constructed the first tiny homes on the Island for Interns who come here seasonally to learn from the Island’s seasoned farmers and young farmers looking to be able to afford to get started.

Currently, we are stepping away from the role of land and lease managers and focusing on servicing existing and new farmers and the local food system. We are conducting an extensive “Listening Tour” of farmers and community members to ascertain needs and opportunities. In June, we will embark on a strategic planning process to create our future direction.

The Friends of the Farms Board is imbued with energy and a deep belief in our role in connecting our community to the land and the natural and social systems that support a thriving agricultural ecosystem.

The Board Treasurer:
As part of adapting our Board to meet the needs of our growing organization, we looking to fill the role of Treasurer. Our ideal candidate will have an enthusiasm for and curiosity about the role of farms in our community and the taste of vegetables on our tables. Equally, a love for financial organization, budgeting and making numbers add up is essential. Some experience with nonprofits is desirable but we can work with you wherever you are on your trajectory of experience. Our very capable Bookkeeper/CPA and full-time Executive Director make life pretty easy to manage within our <$300,000 annual budget. A local accounting firm prepares our tax return, and our current Treasurer who is stepping down is available to provide support during the transition.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Executive Director, Board Chair and Bookkeeper to develop an annual budget.

  • Monitor and manage the budget (e.g., compare actual expenses against budgeted expenses).

  • Update the monthly financial report for the Board review.

  • Support fundraising efforts.

  • File IRS forms (not taxes)

  • Fulfill the responsibilities of a regular Board member including attending monthly Board meetings and special events; advocating for the organization; attending occasional work parties, and engaging in organizational planning and other activities.
