Cider Curious? Meet the Ciderist
St-Lô Founder, Michael Chick, is developing a cider orchard on Bainbridge Island focusing on French and English heritage cider apples to blend the best of these traditional cider cultures with a Pacific Northwest twist….of course. Santé aux paysans!
A portion of the proceeds will go directly to Friends of the Farm’s Young Farmer’s Advisory Committee, a connection that will help support and encourage the next generation of farming on Bainbridge.
The Bainbridge Cider Story
From Heather Burger Executive Director, Friends of the Farms
Last fall, deep in the pandemic, the future felt uncertain. We needed each other but couldn’t gather. We sought purposeful work, but we desperately needed fun. What could we do? Friends of the Farms Program Manager, Sarah Ward, had a plan.
Two things Bainbridge Island has in abundance are wonderful people and heirloom apple trees. Sarah connected us with local farmer and ciderist Michael Chick, founder of St-Lô Cider. Michael would take apples from all over the island and blend them with traditional European heritage apples.
Friends of the Farms put out the call and dozens of families gleaned hundreds of pounds of apples and dropped them off at Johnson Farm.
Michael and his team got to work pressing, blending, fermenting, and bottling. Over the winter our abundance was transformed into a complex, effervescent, hyper-local cider made from Bainbridge Island apples.
Heading into June 2021 we are coming out the other side. Spring felt so full of hope. We hugged our friends and families. We saw each other’s smiles.
Friends of the Farms and St-Lô invite you to our cider release party on Sunday, June 13th at Johnson Farm. Join the celebration and raise a glass with us!
