Farmland Management

The availability of land for commercial and community farming has been identified by the American Farmland Trust as a primary need for the furtherance of local farming. We at Friends of the Farms work to keep our publicly-owned farmland viable and actively farmed. We also work to create opportunities for the acquisition/protection of more local farmland, either public or private.

Friends of the Farms has a management contract with the City of Bainbridge Island and is developing a land use plan for city-owned farmland properties, that allows for a mix of uses. Of special importance is the development of long-term leases for these lands.

Friends of the Farms also provides farm land use policy services for clients other than the City  of Bainbridge Island, under various ownerships, with lease and easement circumstances varying according to individual needs.

Friends of the Farms encourages private landowner-farmer connections:

  • If you are a private landowner who has acreage suitable for farming and wish the land to be farmed, please contact us for a list of potential farmers.
  • If you are a farmer looking for land, please contact us for a list of potential landowners who may be interested in leasing you land for farming.
